Course Description
Mediating the Great War

As we commemorate the centennial of the Great War, it is useful—even urgent—to reflect on how and to what ends it has been represented in a variety of media, first to audiences of the belligerent nations during the war's conduct, and since then in poetry, novels, cinema and via various image platforms (illustration, photography, posters, comics and graphic novels). The more the event recedes from us in time, the more we need an informed awareness of the implications of our reliance on representation, on mediated forms, to render the experience of the War available for critical assessment. Through study of relevant texts, films and images, students will grapple with the problems posed by mediation itself in the context of the historiography of the Great War.
