Course Description

Nonhuman Worlds

Instructor(s): Alexandra Prince, Religion

How does the consciousness and intelligence of nonhuman worlds manifest in ways that push the boundaries of human perception? What possibilities for knowledge and understanding are revealed when we decenter the human experience? How do nonhuman worlds support humanity and what moral obligations do humans have in return? This course contemplates these questions while exploring the place and being of nonhuman beings on planet Earth including animals, plants, fungi and objects. Students will examine and thoughtfully consider perspectives and research on the nonhuman world drawn from behavioral biology, philosophy, animal studies, Indigenous studies and religious studies.
