Course Description

Transnational Women of Color Feminisms

Instructor(s): Gwen D'Arcangelis, Gender Studies

This course introduces students to the feminist activism of women of color—women from the continents of Africa and the African diaspora, Asia and the Asian diaspora, Latin America and Chicanas/Latinas, and Indigenous peoples from around the world. In this class we will explore what it means to be a woman of color in the United States and globally. We will examine the writings of women of color thinkers and creators, centering key issues and concerns, including navigating the constraints of sexism, heterosexism and homophobia, cissexism and transphobia, colonialism, and ableism. We will explore identity, relationships, political activism, and world-building. Specific themes include decolonizing the mind, creative expression, protest and organizing, and liberation movements.
