³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ Retirees

Paul H. L. Walter

Paul H. L. Walter, a former chair of the Chemistry Department who served in national leadership positions in both the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the American
Chemical Society (ACS), died June 25, 2023.

Walter joined ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ in 1967 and chaired the Department of Physics and Chemistry from 1975 to 1985. He worked to establish ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ’s cooperative engineering program with Dartmouth College and enabled the department to receive accreditation from the American Chemical Society. He retired in 1996.

He served as national president of AAUP (1984-1986) and ACS (1998).

“It is rare that someone at ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ reaches the professional heights you have achieved throughout positions of trust and responsibility in both the ACS and the AAUP," Former Dean of the Faculty Eric Weller once wrote to Walter. "And I know of no one in the College’s history who has achieved this while, simultaneously, chairing one of the most complex departments of the College and, more importantly, doing a superb job of it.â€
