2012: Second Year

Six finalists made presentations at the Surrey-Williamson Inn, vying for $17,500 in prizes.

The winners were:
  • First Place: Grumbul. Isaiah Crossman 13 and Matthew Miron 13 received a cash award of $10,000 for Grumbul, a social-media application they pitched to enable customers to register complaints with companies whose products or services they find disappointing. Crossman said the idea for the app occurred to him when a restaurant served him a bad meal. "I wanted to complain, but I was with my girlfriend and just didnt want to hassle with it. Later, I wondered: I have an iPhone, so why can't I just solve this problem right now?"

  • Second Place: Wellfleet Sea Salt. Zachary Fagiano 13 and Hope Schwartz-Leeper 13 were awarded $5,000 for their plan to make the Wellfleet Sea Salt Company, which harvests sea salt using a new technology they had devised, a national brand. Their products are now available online and at nearly 60 retail outlets. Theyre planning a major expansion of their business, developing blends and flavors using local ingredients as well as other original Cape Cod products.

  • Third Place: Rephrase Dance Collective. Dance major Hattie Young 12 was awarded $2,500 for her plan to develop a new Chicago-based dance company specializing in the production of flash mobs.
